“Everyone has a past” to unearth on the Orient Express.
All aboard, because a new trailer for Murder on the Orient Express has arrived. This will be the fourth adaptation to date of one of Agatha Christie’s most lasting mystery stories. But in the hands of veteran Shakespeare director Kenneth Branagh, it looks to be a chilling, ultra-dramatic ride.
We were introduced to an incredible cast of characters including Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, and Willem Dafoe in the first teaser. This second one, on the other hand, gives us more of the context and plot surrounding a mysterious murder in the night.
The new trailer follows Hercule Poirot (Branagh), world-famous and incredibly mustachioed detective, as he boards the Orient Express in the company of wealth and intrigue. Accusations fly left and right throughout the first-class cabin after a man is murdered in the middle of the night. Poirot faces the task of figuring out who did it whilst being trapped in the train alongside them, and predictably, everyone’s a suspect.
The footage aptly captures the sense of claustrophobia the travelers on the Orient Express experience. It also looks distinctly Sherlockian (whether it be the BBC series or those Guy Ritchie films) in its close-up dissection of clues and suspects. But we can hardly begrudge the showiness when it seems what the film is distinctly going for is an updated tone on a period piece. (I mean, that interesting choice to use “Believer” by Imagine Dragons is also a big giveaway.)
There’s a solid expectation that everyone should know what’s to come in a classic Christie story, too. Star-studded and timeless are particular brands in Branagh’s films, and it’s clear that the trailers are banking on those names to get cinemagoers in seats come November 10th.
