This is a super cool shot of the Emperor on his throne, and he has just ordered the citizens to contribute at least one of their sons to the war effort.
Unfortunately for Mulan’s family, they don’t have a son to spare as they were only blessed with daughters. However, the old man is more than willing to provide his services. The only issue is that he isn’t healthy enough to be of use to the army, but they accept his offer anyway.
Here we see that Mulan’s father was once a great warrior, and he still knows how to use a sword.
Understandably, the family is upset because they know that the old man won’t return from battle, no matter how skilled he is with a blade.
Mulan’s father’s ailing health prompts her to pick up the sword and take his place. It’s clear from this scene that she’s familiar with a weapon, presumably because she’s had a lifetime of practice, albeit from the safety of her home.
