One of the principle directors behind ABC’s break0ut hit Modern Family is moving up in the world quickly, signing on to take the reigns of the upcoming remake of Arthur, the story of a boozed-up rich kid who falls in love with a plebe, putting his inheritance at risk. The original film, as you hopefully know, was carried by the outrageous and energetic performance of Dudley Moore. In the new version, that task will fall to another crazy Brit, Russell Brand. And he will be directed through it by Jason Winer, who is responsible for directing ten of Modern Family’s first 19 episodes. He co-executive produced six, as well.
The original film’s story, as described by The Hollywood Reporter: “…centered on a boozy playboy who is set to inherit a fortune if he marries an heiress his family thinks will make something out of him. However, he falls in love with a working-class woman and turns to his valet for help when his family makes him choose between money and love.”
When this remake was first announced, the reaction was rather subdued. It’s hard to say whether anyone really has a great deal of sentimental attachment to the original Arthur, as it isn’t exactly the height of early-80s comedy. So to see Russell Brand taking it on not only makes sense – there are only so many roles for a man of his nature – it also doesn’t ruffle any feathers. So to see Winer looking to cut his teeth on this film also makes sense. Lets see what he can do.
Side Note: Jason Winer also played Panos, the guy with the kick-ass uni-brow in Van Wilder.
