Martin Lawrence Says Bad Boys 3 is Just Waiting on Bruckheimer

Long time readers of FSR know that if there’s a sweet spot in my soul for the Bad Boys franchise. Unapologetically, I’m a fan of both the tightly wound, intense first installment and the over-the-top, absurdest explosion of the second installment. Bad Boys is the driving force behind all of the stumping I’ve done in defense of director Michael Bay over the past few years, and it will continue to be a regular player in my downtime DVD line-up.

That said, the prospect of another Bad Boys film – as ridiculous as it may seem – is a fun one. To see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence back in the banter, making action with Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer again would be downright dreamy. In fact, a recent viewing of Armageddon reminded me of my longing for Bay and Bruckheimer to get back together for some sweet, sweet action love soon. Bad Boys 3 could be just the movie to do it. Because as Martin Lawrence explained to MTV this week, everyone is in, and they’re all waiting on Bruckheimer.

“Any time you can get Big Willie to come out and talk about doing a third installment of a hot movie like Bad Boys, you have to take notice,” Lawrence explained while making the press rounds for his latest film, Death at a Funeral. “I met with Michael Bay, and he said he’s onboard too – so it’s real…We’re just waiting on Jerry Bruckheimer to let us know when it’s really real.”

Of the principle players involved in such a movie, Lawrence clearly has the most to gain by seeing Bad Boys 3 come to fruition. Will Smith, Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer have plenty of other projects to keep him busy. But the nature of a Bad Boys movie – the amount of fun everyone seems to have making them – seems to be a driving force for everyone involved. And as we reported back in August 2009, the studio interest is there. Columbia Pictures has Peter Craig already working on a script.

The big question that remains is whether or not the timing will be right for everyone. Smith has several project in the works, in varying capacities. And Michael Bay will be gearing up Transformers 3 over at Dreamworks very soon. It would take some shifty scheduling to bring all of the necessary components together. Here’s hoping they get it done.
