‘Man of Steel’ Trailer Gives Us The Return of a Melancholic Superman

Superman doesn’t look all that happy in these first two (near identical) teasers for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. If you thought Bryan Singer’s Superman was an unbearable mope, wait until you get a peak at Snyder’s, who has apparently made one of our greatest heroes in the galaxy a bearded, lonely and sad fisherman. You can’t get more “gritty” and “real” than that shocking transformation.

Check both teasers out below, one with Kevin Costner narrating and one featuring Russell Crowe’s melodic grumbling.

With that moody trailer music, Kevin Costner’s depressingly fatherly voice, the bushy “I’m depressed” beard Superman’s got going on, this is one melancholic trailer.

It’s a kind of baffling that it’s so low-key and character-centered with no action teased at. With so many complaints about the lack of punches thrown in Singer’s picture, you’d think the brass at Warners would want to show that this is a Superman with some bite. The total lack of stuff blowing up real nice aside, this is a promising look at what seems to be Zack Snyder’s most grounded film yet. There’s a surprising level of restraint he’s showing off here with all of his signature stamps in hiding. No slow-motion? No girls in skimpy outfits? No sweaty dudes?

How on Earth is this a Zack Snyder movie?!?

And, wait, there’s more! An alternate trailer has been put online at MSN, replacing Costner’s elegant voice with a more gruff-sounding Russell Crowe. I suppose you can’t get two cooler dads than those two guys.

Man of Steel opens June 14th, 2013
