Mallrats 2 Casting is Underway With Five Familiar Faces

He’s still working on the script and is a year away from starting production on Mallrats 2, but Kevin Smith has begun teasing out some details for the recently announced sequel. Mostly he’s been sharing photos of himself reunited with stars from the 20-year-old original, pretty much confirming that these actors and comic book legends will be back. The first arrived on Friday, and it began with a good mix of players: Jason Mewes, of course, plus Michael Rooker and comics icon Stan Lee. Apparently those three and Smith were all together last week anyway for a car commercial that ties into Avengers: Age of Ultron – let’s not forget that Rooker is now a part of the MCU via Guardians of the Galaxy.

The second photo arrived today, adding Shannen Doherty to the mix. Smith captioned the image with grateful acknowledgment of her significance to the property: “This is special to me because it was Shando herself who single-handedly got Mallrats the green-light back in ‘95!”

Of course, now Ben Affleck is the most famous name from the original. Or maybe Stan Lee is (back then he wasn’t so well-known for all his comic book movie cameos). Followed by Jason Lee. Smith notes that he’s now got five down (including himself) and there’s seven more to go. That bunch might include Affleck, Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Claire Forlani, Ethan Suplee, Joey Lauren Adams and Sven-Ole Thorsen. What about Renee Humphrey, who played Tricia? She’s not on the below drawing of the cast Smith recently featured on his Facebook page, so maybe she’s already certainly not coming back.

Perhaps the character is just too famous a writer to be in the vicinity of the mall. To recap, as we learned at the end of the first movie, she became a best-selling author thanks to her sex memoir, Brodie (Jason Lee) became the host of The Tonight Show, Rene (Doherty) became the drummer/band leader for the show’s orchestra, T.S. and Brandi (London and Forlani) married at Universal Studios, Shannon (Affleck) went to prison, William (Suplee) finally saw the sailboat in the Magic Eye poster) and Jay and Silent Bob went off to more View Askewniverse adventures, the one teased here being the plot of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

And Smith added this update on two of the characters recently: “After the events of Mallrats, Brodie Bruce and his longtime love Rene were married. The comic book-loving proprietor of Brodie Bruce’s Secret Stash insisted on naming their only child Banner Bruce.”

As for the plot of the sequel, it’s possible that it will still be Mallrats 2: Die Hard in a Mall as teased back when the original was being made. If that was still to be the idea, I’m hoping that Affleck’s character is out of prison and now taking hostages at the location he was arrested. And then Silent Bob (Smith) beats him up at the end while wearing his Batman costume, because meta.
