The Mean Girls star reveals that she intends to get the ball rolling on a sequel.
Two days ago, Lindsay Lohan gave an interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson. During the interview, she talked about her time living in the Middle East and the humanitarian work she has done with Syrian refugees. She also revealed that she is enthusiastic about a sequel to the beloved 2004 film Mean Girls.
Lohan stated that she has been interested in a sequel to the film for a long time and revealed that she has even written a treatment for it. She acknowledges that Tina Fey (who wrote the script for and starred in Mean Girls) and producer Lorne Michaels are currently busy with other projects, but hopes that they will respond positively.
Mean Girls is one of the most popular teen comedies of the 2000s and features brilliant performances from Lohan, Fey, Tim Meadows, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, and Amanda Seyfried. The film is loosely based on Rosalind Wiseman’s self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabes and its success makes it a logical candidate for a sequel. Lohan speculated that director Mark Waters would likely be happy to direct another Mean Girls film and that she would love to cast both Jimmy Fallon and Jamie Lee Curtis (whom she worked with on Freaky Friday).
Lohan has not starred in a film since 2013’s The Canyons, but has been working hard as a humanitarian as well as developing her own production and branding company. Evidently, she also has an aptitude for writing— penning the treatment for the Mean Girls sequel and also expressed interest in starting her own film studio in the Middle East.
It would be wonderful if Lohan teamed up with the original cast and crew (plus some new faces!) for a legitimate sequel. Of course, there already was a Mean Girls sequel in 2011, an ill-fated television film with only Tim Meadows reprising his role. Mean Girls has had a widespread cultural impact: it’s been adapted into a stage musical set to premiere in late 2017 and Warner Brothers proposed a spin-off film called Mean Moms which has since been stalled. Here’s hoping that someone at Paramount reads Lohan’s treatment and decides to move forward with it.
