LeBron James Basketball Comedy ‘Survivor’s Remorse’ Gets Series Order From Starz

When I think comedy and the Miami Heat’s big three, I’m generally looking at Chris Bosh interview-bombing Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, but James has bigger aspirations than fooling around between quarters. I mean, naturally. He’s the King. James, in association with Mike O’Malley, Tom Werner, Maverick Carter, and Paul Wachter, now have a six episode series order by Starz for their basketball-centric half-hour scripted television project, Survivor’s Guilt.

To be written and executive-produced by O’Malley, the show will focus on young basketball prodigy Cam Calloway, who moves to Georgia with his cousin Reggie Vaughn after signing a multi-million dollar contract to play for their pro basketball franchise. They contend with his sudden fame and fortune, family hangers-on, and Cam’s struggles to hold on to the community from which he came.

Many will recognize O’Malley for his role as Burt Hummel, father of Chris Colfer’s Kurt on Glee, or if you’re like me, as the host of Nickelodeon Guts in the early nineties, which is still the best game show in the history of ever. It’s inarguable. He explains his foray into the writing and producing side of television, saying “Ever since I got cut from the freshman hoops team at Bishop Guertin High School in 1980, I’ve wanted to write about my love and hatred of basketball. Starz has given us great freedom to explore an authentic world inspired by Maverick and LeBron. Tom’s legendary TV career and his experiences as a professional sports owner combined with Paul’s wealth of business and entertainment industry relationships have given this team a truly strong foundation to build a successful series.”

Maverick Carter is LeBron James’ childhood friend, and owner of LRMR, the management firm whom represents James. The firm was responsible for the disastrously received one-hour special, “The Decision”, leading up to James choosing to play for the Heat franchise during his free agency. With Maverick and James providing much of the narrative experience rather than handling the reins, Starz is likely to avoid any such debacles.

This won’t be the first time LeBron James has experienced the world of entertainment, as he has appeared on HBO’s Entourage, and is also set to star alongside actor and comedian Kevin Hart in Ballers, where Hart will play a man quite literally in the shadow of his NBA superstar brother. Also, James executive-produced YouTube series, The LeBrons, but we’ll not talk about that.

There have been no casting announcements for Survivor’s Remorse as of yet.
