Kevin Smith Has Increased the Number of Returning Actors for Mallrats 2

I’ve been enjoying Kevin Smith’s game of Mallrats 2 casting announcements. Each day he takes to Twitter and adds another actor to the bunch of original Mallrats players returning for the sequel. It’s mostly been a game of suspense because everyone expects Ben Affleck to be the final name revealed, since he’s the most famous Mallrats alumni and Smith often jokes about how his longtime friend is Batman now and so too big for the filmmaker’s indie shenanigans. Even though today wasn’t the day we’d get that final name, I thought it would be funny if Smith did tweet a photo of Affleck on the occasion of it being April Fool’s Day and we’d all be left wondering if the announcement is real or not.

That didn’t happen, but Smith made another kind of reveal that’s appropriate for this date: the number of returning cast members is now 15 rather than 12. Since the start he’s indicated that there’s a dozen people coming back. He’s even posted a collage of 12 faces that could be assumed to be the planned-for ensemble. Yesterday’s tweet, featuring a photo of Joey Lauren Adams (who I didn’t think was a given since she and Smith are exes), was captioned with a reminder that there were only “2 to go!” But today, Smith tweeted a photo of Sven Ole-Thorsen (La Fours) captioned with the unacknowledged increase of “11 down, 4 to go!”

Maybe he’s stalling because he thought Affleck would be signed and committed by now and isn’t. Those three extras will probably be almost the equivalent of extras. There are fans who would be happy to see individual announcements for Smith regulars like Bryan Johnson (Steve-Dave), Walter Flanagan, Brian O’Halloran and producer Scott Mosier, and they wouldn’t necessarily have to play the same characters (except Johnson). There’s also Priscilla Barnes, who’s hot right now thanks to a recurring role on Jane the Virgin and maybe therefore hard to get but certainly a fun one to have return. Claire Forlani can stay way if she wants.

One cruel way to play the endgame is if he continues naming names through the weekend. Number 15 would come along on Sunday, which is Easter. I wonder who played the Easter bunny in the original.

Here are the 11 original cast members already revealed to be returning: Smith, Jason Mewes, Stan Lee, Michael Rooker, Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, Renee Humphrey, Jeremy London, Adams and Ole-Thorsen. Check out the tweets we haven’t previously shared below.
