Joss Whedon Not Involved with ‘Buffy’ Relaunch

The director of the original film is trying to bring Buffy back to life to fight again, but she may be doing it without Joss Whedon.

Three cheers for originality in Hollywood went out this evening as news was announced that two producers from Vertigo are working with the director of the original 1992 film, Fran Rubel Kuzui, to bring a relaunch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer back into our lives.

While I’m actually really excited that the character could come back into the media, but The Hollywood Reporter is Hollywood reporting that Joss Whedon won’t be involved. Or at least isn’t right now. Kuzui maintained rights since they discovered the property back in the early 1990s, and was also an EP for the television series written by Whedon. But, as expected, it looks like the movie won’t touch on the television canon in any way. Probably a wise move.

There’s little detail as to how this project would pan out, but the early indication is that it would be refitted as a franchise-style big picture, stepping miles and miles away from the campy goodness of the original film, the television series, and moving toward making the character of Buffy darker and most likely CGI-filled.

Oddly enough, with the vampire craze going on, it looks like Buffy would be both coming early and late to the party.

What do you think? No Whedon?
