The day’s top headlines in bite-size portions.
Kind of slow out there, but the most encouraging news of the day has to be the above picture of John Turturro back as everybody’s favorite bowler, Jesus Quintana. Originally from The Big Lebowski, Jesus has been resurrected (sorry) for the upcoming film Going Places, which is based on the French sex-farce Les valseuses by Bertrand Blier and which Turturro is adapting and directing himself. From the looks of it, Jesus is a snug glove Turturro fits into perfectly, and you can tell just by the expression on his face that he’s at home in the character and has kept him as spirited and lovably-obnoxious as ever. Also from the looks of it, he’s hanging out at a place that I’m really hoping is called the “Melonbowl” because that’s the best alley name ever. Dig the official synopsis:
“John Turturro plays Jesus Quintana in GOING PLACES, a film about a trio of misfits whose irreverent, sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds. When they make enemies with a gun-toting hairdresser, their journey becomes one of constant escape from the law, from society and from the hairdresser, all while the bonds of their outsider family strengthen.”
Going Places co-stars Bobby Canavale (Vinyl), Audrey Tautou (Amelie), and Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon (Mr. Woodcock), and will most likely get a 2017 release, though nothing’s etched in stone yet. Don’t worry, you’ll know when it’s announced because the movie part of your internet will combust.
Speaking of thinly-veiled religious references, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel and franchise prequel Alien: Covenant is less than a year from release and now we’ve finally gotten a look at some of the new (old) breed of the titular species in the form of some set pics over at SoIsItAnyGood. There’s what would appear to be a big-ass facehugger, a clutch of eggs, a couple of models that look like various phases of the chestburster, and to top it all off, there’s even a mugshot of the new xenomorph, rumored to be appropriately named the “neomorph,” that looks like the big bad we all know and love only less evolved and refined. It’s a pretty cool collection of images over there, but one could also consider them a little spoiler-y, so we’ll just let you click the link above instead of posting them for all to see, willing or not. Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demien Bichir et al and is slated for release August 4th, 2017.
If you love good screenwriting, you need to check out this post over at Indiewire that links to a dozen of the year’s most-talked-about scripts, including Anthropoid, Captain Fantastic, The Girl on the Train, Hail Caesar!, Love & Friendship and Manchester By The Sea. Intended only your own edification, this first batch is just that, an initial offering, as Indiewire promises to update the list as regularly as they can throughout awards season. I myself hovered over this page last year and can attest there’s going to be tons of stuff going up, so burgeoning screenwriters especially need to bookmark the link and visit it weekly.
And lastly, since it’s Friday we’ll try to leave you with a smile on your face, that is unless you’re already sick to death of David S. Pumpkins. Don’t act like you don’t know who I’m talking about: the character ‐ part-Beetlejuice, part-Ed-Grimley, and part-drunk-step-uncle ‐ was debuted by Tom Hanks on last week’s SNL and has since been everywhere, quickly becoming the meme du jour as well as the last-minute Halloween costume of 2016. Buzzfeed contributor Jesse McLaren saw a chance to strike internet gold and took it, splicing Pumpkins into a slew of your favorite horror films in this video posted to his Twitter. I can’t tell if this is funny or terrifying, but either way it’s the perfect thing to kick off your Halloween weekend. Enjoy.
