The Natalie Portman-led Western Jane Got a Gun has been through a lot. Directors quitting on the first day of shooting, numerous changes to the cast at the last minute and a fight to find distribution (which eventually arrived thanks to The Weinstein Company). Even by the usually rough standards of getting movies made in Hollywood, this one has been a rough ride. None of it has stopped this film, however, as it is now gearing up for a release: first in France on November 25, then in the United States in February 2016.

The first trailer for the film, which was made from a 2011 Black List script by Brian Duffield, has arrived and it’s looking pretty fierce. It’s easy to imagine what might have been had We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay stayed on alongside the original cast of Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender. Instead we’ve got a movie that survived being dumped by a studio (Relativity) going bankrupt with a cast that includes Portman, Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor. It’s from director Gavin O’Connor, who previously made Warrior and Miracle. In the end, it’s not a terrible result considering everything that went wrong throughout the production.
