Marvel is bringing their next living weapon to Netflix.
Over the weekend, Marvel and Netflix released the full teaser for Iron Fist, the next installment of their Defenders franchise. It featured Game of Thrones’ Finn Jones as Danny Rand doing some meditation, being told of his “human weapon” status in what sounds very much like a Game of Thronesian prophecy (“a child touched by fire”), then kicking some ass in a hallway.
So yeah, pretty par for the course. But he does also have a very cool shot of Danny’s fists glowing yellow as he uses the power of the Iron Fist.
It’s hard not to get a bit of a Doctor Strange vibe from that effect. They’re very similar stories: privileged white dudes from New York are brought low before discovering ancient mystical powers that allow them to come back and thwart the evils of the world.
The hesitation I’ve heard about Iron Fist from a number of people seems to revolve around not trusting Finn Jones as a leading man. I suspect that a lot of this stems from his understated role in Game of Thrones. Beyond that, he’s still a mostly unknown quantity. In this trailer, he stays mostly quiet and lets his glowing fists do the talking. Without knowing more, I’d say this is a pretty positive start for the introduction of a Netflix hero before they begin tying everything together for The Defenders. It now makes more sense as to why they held Iron First until the end, as it lines up well with the direction that the Cinematic Universe is going. It’s time to dive head-first into the appropriated mysticism of Manhattan’s penthouse denizens, which will likely be more fun than it sounds.
