SUPER FAMILY -- In Disney Pixar’s “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home when a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot that only the Incredibles can overcome together. Also featuring the voices of Sarah Vowell as Violet and Huck Milner as Dash, “Incredibles 2” opens in U.S. theaters on June 15, 2018. ©2017 Disney•Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Our first cinematic superhero family has returned to show the big boys how it’s done.

After 14 years of pleading, director Brad Bird has finally succumbed to our desperate cries for an Incredibles sequel. No more speculation, no more handwringing. They’re back. The fantastic family is set to return to theaters on June 15th, and after a decent enough teaser, we now get a proper look at what Pixar has in store for their first super-family.

Watch the sneak peek of Incredibles 2 below.

Seeming to pick up directly where the original film left off, we see the Parr family going toe-to-toe with The Underminer (voiced by John Ratzenberger), the malevolent mole man who lives beneath us but nothing is beneath him! In spite of a good show of household butt-kickery, we learn that the superhero business is still an illegal one. The Parrs have to keep their spandex in the closet. Which is a shame since Dash (Huck Milner) is looking/pretending to define his entire existence around their heroics. This essentially allows Incredibles 2 to maintain its Family Matters/Justice League comedy dynamic.

Does this mean that the sequel is also looking to preserve the status quo rather than pushing the genre as it did in 2004? Recently, we speculated that Pixar’s golden age may be behind us. Can they possibly contribute anything new to the superhero genre now that Marvel cranks out several successful blockbusters a year and the rest of Hollywood frenziedly attempts to duplicate them?

Does it matter? Do I care?

This trailer promises more of the same and I love that same! We get our first look at Bob Odenkirk’s billionaire tycoon, Winston Deavor. He approaches Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) to grab the attention of the Parrs but seems to only be interested in what Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) has to offer. While she’s off saving the city on her rad Elasti-cycle, Bob (Craig T. Nelson) is stuck at home dozing his way through Jack-Jack’s doozles of Doozledorf.

Mr. Incredible as Mr. Mom is my jam. He’s the caring, loving, adorable husband and father of three who longs to be out in the fight but cherishes the family he’s built with Helen. If she’s out there battling the baddies then he can wage war with math back home. Sure, he sucks at it. That’s where our delight factors in. Already I can feel my heartstrings getting strummed as he declares how his domestic success will aid in her heroic success. Listen to Edna Mode (voiced by Bird): “If done properly, parenting is a heroic act.”

We’re still waiting for the big bad to reveal him/herself. I certainly don’t trust Odenkirk. If Incredibles 2 follows the same line of thinking as the first film, then that welcoming hand will transform into a death grip. However, we still haven’t seen (er, heard) Catherine Keener. Her Mrs. Deavor might prove to be a formidable foe. The truth is that I really don’t care about the bad guy. Heck, I’ll settle for more Underminer, or the return of Jason Lee’s Syndrome. The family is what’s important.

Jack-Jack will most likely steal the show this time around. With the Parrs still discovering new, horrifying powers hidden within their youngest, that baby might prove to be the greatest threat of all. Bob needs to keep those cookies stocked and remember to flat-palm it when feeding his little beast-boy.
