Ian Fleming Was One Badass Writer

James Bond author Ian Fleming didn’t only write books, he also had his own plans on how do deal with the Nazis. Sadly, none of his plans got put into effect, but a new museum exhibit will tell you how it would have gone down.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a few years, or don’t care anything about British super-spies with the last name Bond, then you know that Ian Fleming was the author of the original James Bond novels. However, did you know he was also pretty much a badass as well?

Fleming served as an intelligence officer in Britain during World War II, and formulated several operations including “Operation Goldeneye” to maintain contact with Gibraltar in the event that Spain defected to the Axis side, and “Operation Ruthless”, which was a plan to steal a German codebook, and might have been the basis for From Russia With Love. True story.

From Fleming’s own notes on the “Ruthless” project, “Crash plane in the Channel after making S.O.S. to rescue service. Once aboard rescue boat, shoot German crew, dump overboard, bring rescue boat back to English port.” Like clockwork, right? The whole “shoot German crew” thing is pretty gritty and in your face, which was apparently Fleming’s style. Seems a little cold James Bond, though… although maybe not the new and in your face Daniel Craig model from Casino Royale and the upcoming Quantum of Solace.

According to the Times Online, visitors to the UK can check out these newly released documents at the Imperial War Museum, which probably has some pretty decent security to thwart would-be thieves. However, if you have your own personal Q, you might be able to pull it off.
