Hug It Out: A Supercut Worth Embracing

By  · Published on November 9th, 2016

You know you need one today, so get in here.

Of all humankind’s interpersonal gestures – handshakes, high fives, head nods, eye contact, even sex – nothing is particularly as personal as a hug. A hug says “I love you” as clearly as it does “I need you,” it says “I know it’s not okay” while also promising that everything will be all right, it comforts as well as draws comfort, it supports as well as requires support. A hug is honest, it is vulnerable, it is strength-building, it is empowering, and it is the gesture we fall into when we have nothing left to give of ourselves and must instead rely on others for resilience. A hug is the first thing we unfurl to a friend in need, it is a display of our willingness to be there for one another, to share in their sadness and transmit our strength to them. A hug is the purest physical expression of a parents’ love, or a child’s, or a friend’s. There is, in short, no more succinct way to express compassion, affection, affinity, commiseration, or encouragement than a simple hug.

Cinema is well aware of the economical values of hugs, narratively speaking, and their ability to convey in silent seconds what minutes of the most moving monologues could only hint at. With that in mind, enjoy this supercut from Jose Rico of 50+ cinematic hugs (movies listed below) that represent pretty much the entire spectrum of human emotion without saying a word. Then go hug somebody, it’s good for you and them.
