Holiday themes are a staple for the horror genre, with every occasion now linked to at least one scary movie. Well, I’m not sure about Grandparents Day, which is a surprise if there’s not one already, but the major festivities such as Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are all covered. And they’ll be covered again, courtesy of an anthology film titled Holidays. According to Deadline, the feature will focus on “globally recognized celebrations,” so sadly there might not be a segment for President’s Day.
Kevin Smith is one of the filmmakers on board to deliver one of the shorts, which makes sense because his upcoming Krampus-based holiday horror feature Anti-Claus was initially pitched as part of another anthology for the same production company, XYZ Films. Smith tweeted yesterday that his segment is titled “Hollow Ian.” Other directors attached include Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Matt Johnson (The Dirties), Scott Stewart (Dark Skies), Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact), Dennis Widmyer & Kevin Kolsch (Starry Eyes), Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim) and Anthony Scott Burns (Manifold). More will be announced soon.
While we contemplate which holidays need to make the cut and maybe assign the above names to preferred celebrations (can one of them please do a non-Leprechaun-based St. Patrick’s Day short, maybe involving green bagels?), I am also now wondering if horror anthologies will continue to be a trend and which other concepts could warrant one. In the style of ABCs of Death there could be 123s of Death, in which the body counts rise with each short. There could be a horror take on the city-based “I Love You” features (Paris Je T’Aime, New York I Love You, etc.) with something like Austin, You Kill Me.
