Cheerio! Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s dashing detective Sherlock Holmes are in for a treat. So are fans of Guy Ritchie’s films Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Sherlock Holmes is to become a reality in 2010.
Posted earlier today on Coming Soon, Ritchie has come aboard not only to direct the film but also to rework the script, originally written by Tony Peckham. Sherlock Holmes will be released by Warner Brothers and produced by Lionel Wigram and Dan Lin. And get this: the characters of Holmes and his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson are a re-imagining of a upcoming comic written by Wigram. The characters are designed to be more adventurous and hands-on, even wielding weapons. Holmes has previous experience with guns, swords, and martial arts. Cool.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the most beloved and avidly read about characters in literature, right up there with “The Boy Who Lived”. How will fans respond to the supposed bigger and badder Holmes? We’ve seen a lot of over-the-top yet visually stunning comics turned movies lately. If Holmes ends up being anything like 300, Sin City or Batman Begins, I think fans will be really pleased. Mainly, I’m just excited to talk in a King’s English accent and say things like “Jolly good” in anticipation of its release.
While I’m looking forward to this version of Sherlock Holmes, The Great Mouse Detective will always be number one in my heart.
