To say that the box office performance of Grindhouse last week was disappointing would be an understatement. Many of us were, in fact, crushed by its $11 million dollar showing and its 5th place turnout, falling right behind Are We Done Yet? But despite last week’s poor showing, many had hoped that Grindhouse would find it’s audience in week 2. We were sadly mistaken.
Over at /Film, Peter writes about how Grindhouse is on pace to bring in around $3 million this weekend, almost a 75% drop from last week. An even more startling fact was the fact that it had a per screen average of $494 on Friday. That is only about 55 tickets per theater. Ouch…
So this raises the question, what will happen next with Grindhouse? If my knowledge of the Weinstein’s serves me right, this flick is dead. They are not known to beat a dead horse, or a dead film for that matter. Despite the rumors, the probably won’t cut it into two movies, as that can’t help at this point. Sadly, the next success that they can look forward to is the DVD release, which I can now imagine may come sooner than we think. For now though, Grindhouse appears to be on it’s last leg (and it’s not the one with the cool gun…)
