A First Look At Good and Evil in ‘Good Omens’

Introducing the Apocalypse's most eccentric angel-demon duo.

Introducing the Apocalypse’s most eccentric angel-demon duo.

The dark and light of the Terry Pratchett-Neil Gaiman collab novel have physically manifested for the first time in tweet form. Gaiman has posted a first look at David Tennant and Michael Sheen‘s fully costumed characters in the Amazon adaptation of Good Omens.

The fantasy six-parter recently began filming in London, and fans have been eager for a taste of it since initial casting announcements have left several feeling uninspired (two white dudes again?). Gaiman and the Pratchett estate have been supportive of Tennant and Sheen’s casting of Crowley and Aziraphale from the beginning. As production commenced, both camps have posted little teasers from the set before the full picture reveals (including a cropped version of the photo of just the characters’ shoes!). Now, with concrete representations of these iconic fantasy characters out on the Twitter-sphere and beyond, the excitement is very much real.

As the epitome of demonic and angelic, Crowley and Aziraphale have embraced the age-old dark vs. light in their wardrobe, fitting right into comfortable human guises. Tennant’s penchant for off-kilter and even evil characters (Kilgrave, Barty Crouch Jr.) shines through in a single photo, and Sheen looks as “English” as they come. Both seem to fit book descriptions as well as audiences could have hoped. With their combined caliber, it’s likely the similarly outlandish friendship they have in the source material will be replicated too.

The production is still in its early days, but this first look is enough to stoke the fire of excitement. We’ll have to wait patiently for any possible sneak peeks of other characters. Yeah, one of the 170 Gaiman talked about on his Tumblr. Also cast in the series are Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, Adria Arjona, Nina Sosanya, Ned Dennehy and Ariyon Bakare. But we know that’s the tip of the iceberg for this fantasy adaptation, which simultaneously borrows from the comedy and horror genres to tell its unconventional version of the Apocalypse. Good Omens is set for a 2019 premiere on Amazon Prime and a BBC Two debut after initial release.
