What’s New to Stream on Netflix for October 2018

Netflix Originals have never been better.
Netflix The Night Comes For Us
By  · Published on October 10th, 2018

Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — October 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Netflix Pick of the Month

It’s going to be a while before we officially get The Raid 3, but happily what amounts to an unofficial entry in the franchise is coming home this month in the form of The Night Comes for Us (10/19). Timo Tjahjanto’s action epic offers a blistering beat-down of brutality guaranteed to drop your jaw and lift your spirits. Joe Taslim takes the lead alongside fellow Raid veterans Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle, and Zack Lee, and along with the rest of able-bodied Jakarta they turn a simple premise — it’s basically a blood-soaked Gloria (1980) riff — into pure action movie brilliance.

Creepy Netflix Originals!

Creeped Out – Season 1 brings a terror anthology show for teens (pre-teens? I don’t know how kids work these days) that looks like a slightly edgier Are You Afraid of the Dark or Goosebumps. If nothing else it promises to be a great primer for getting the young ones into horror early on. Gareth Evans’ Apostle (10/12) teases a hybrid of action and cult horror, and while I’m of the opinion neither element really works that well others seem to think it’s pretty damn great. So watch it for yourself! The Haunting of Hill House (10/12) tackles Shirley Jackson’s classic novel across ten episodes, and director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game) is the driving force behind its nightmarish beauty. I’m only a few episodes in, but hot damn is it great. Viewers looking for “true” stories of spooky terror will want to give Haunted (10/19) a spin. The show explores “real” hauntings with interviews and recreations. Last but definitely not least, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (10/26) puts a supernatural spin on the Riverdale crowd — I guess? I don’t watch Riverdale, but this one looks far more up my alley.

Stephen King!

It’s October, so of course Netflix is adding a couple films from the king of terror. Oddly, though, one of them is The Green Mile (1999). Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good movie, but there are far more horrifying entries in King’s filmography. Exhibit A? Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). It may be a pretty poor adaptation of the novel, but it’s one hell of a horror movie as it mashes together the supernatural with the real-world terror of alcoholism and abuse.

An Emotionally Draining Nightmare

Mass shootings may feel like an American nightmare, but while we’re home to most of them — by a wide-ass margin — the rest of the world occasionally suffers too. 22 July explores the devastating incident experienced by Norway a few years back in which an asshole with an agenda murdered dozens of people. Paul Greengrass’ film shifts between the attack itself, the rehabilitation efforts of the victims, and the nation’s response. It’s a powerful look at humanity, both our evil and our grace.
