What’s New to Stream on Netflix for June 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Netflix for June 2018!
The Staircase X

Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — June 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Netflix Pick of the Month

One area where the streaming service has been stepping up its game recently is in original true crime documentaries like The Keepers and Evil Genius. Their latest takes an existing true crime classic, 2004’s The Staircase, and adds new episodes that work to tie up a few more loose ends. The eight-episode original, a two-episode follow-up from a few years ago, and three brand new episodes combine to tell a fascinating tale exploring not only the crime itself but also the justice system. Viewers will see their suspicions waver between confidence and doubt as to the man’s innocence, and it’s all the more bingeable because of it.

Thor Ragnarok

New Blockbusters from a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Two of last year’s biggest hits are visiting Earth’s premiere streaming service this month, and you’ll be happy to know both feature strong female characters kicking ass left and right. Thor: Ragnarok (2017) lands on June 5th and delivers one of the most entertaining Marvel films yet. There are fantastic action sequences and high stakes, but there’s also epic amounts of humor and world-building. It’s a ridiculously good time. One of Disney’s other monster franchises continues too with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) which hits Netflix on June 26th. I don’t love it like a lot of you do, but it’s still a damn good piece of pop entertainment with one of the year’s best scenes.

Underdogs

It’s never a bad time to watch a movie about underdogs fighting back against overwhelming odds, and this month sees two such tales arrive on Netflix. First up is Miracle (2004), the true story of the US Hockey team’s stunning victory against the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics. I’m not a “sports movie” guy, but I am a “great movie” guy, and this flick counts thanks to its heart and a fantastic performance from Kurt Russell. Mohawk (2017) lands on June 30th, and while it’s the newer film it’s set much further into the past. The director of the terrifically good We Are Still Here tackles a more painfully historic type of horror here as Native Americans engage in a doomed battle with invading Europeans.

Netflix Set It Up

Netflix Originals

It’s hard to keep up with Netflix’s original content and they’re releasing so many titles each month (that are often buried on the service), but they can sometimes be worth seeking out. Two new ones are hitting on June 15th, and while I’ve seen neither both sound interesting. Set It Up is a rom-com starring Zoey Deutch, and honestly, that’s all I need to hear to make me want to see it. The Israel film Maktub has no such recognizable talents (to me at least), but the premise intrigues as it follows two criminals who survive a terrorist attack and decide to start helping people instead of stealing from them.
