What’s New to Stream on Hulu for June 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Hulu in June 2018!
Punisher War Zone
By  · Published on June 2nd, 2018

Hulu has been stuck in the third-place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are terrific gems that make Hulu a destination for more than just TV.

The complete list of new movies hitting Hulu this month — June 2018 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.

Hulu Pick of the Month

I’m partial to Thomas Jane’s portrayal in the 2004 version, but there’s no denying the visceral action beats and bloody good demises that fill Lexi Alexander’s Punisher: War Zone (2008) which hits Hulu on June 17th. The film wisely avoids re-hashing the man’s origin story and instead hits the ground running… and jumping, flipping, and climbing thanks to a trio of parkour baddies. And speaking of the trio, The Punisher’s dismissal of them is a goddamn delight. Ray Stevenson is killer in the title role, and Doug Hutchison gives exactly the kind of despicable and slimey villain turn you’d expect.

Hard Rain

90s Action!

Are action movies from the 1990s typically the best the genre has to offer? No, not in the slightest, but there are still plenty of good to great examples delivering blasts of adrenaline and fun. Wesley Snipes goes skydiving in Drop Zone (1994) in order to catch some crooks, while Christian Slater takes in a swim with Hard Rain (1998), and yes, both are ridiculous in just the right measure. Fans of “dream team” pairings might want to give Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991) and Universal Soldier (1992) each a spin. The former sees Mickey Rourke and Don Johnson teaming up for a weird action romp while the latter teams up Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme before pitting them against each other. Sorry, spoiler from 26 years ago. Last but definitely not least, Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead (1995) is a western like no other as he brings his energetic style to the old west alongside a kick-ass cast.

Houses October Built

Horrors!

What’s crazier than a haunted house movie? A haunted house movie starring Oliver Reed, Karen Black, and Burgess Meredith. Seriously, check out these nutters in Burnt Offerings (1976). In the mood for unnecessary remakes and sequels? Inside (2018) fits the bill, and starting on 6/15 you can make it a double bill with Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014). Also coming June 15th is the sequel to Clive Barker’s debut feature, and while Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) is the lesser film it’s also bigger and more creative. Finally, the terrific found-footage thriller The Houses October Built (2014) and its inferior sequel, The Houses October Built 2 (2017), both arrive on the 15th as well.

Leprechaun

Why’d It Have to Be Leprechauns?!

There are lots of horror franchises out there, and while none are brilliant all the way through most offer a mix of good, bad, and great entries. There’s also the Leprechaun franchise. I’m not sure why you’d want to watch the whole series — maybe to prepare for next year’s Leprechaun Returns — but if you’re so inclined all seven current films are available on Hulu including Leprechaun (1993), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Leprechaun 3 (1995), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996), Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000), Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood (2003), and the abysmal reboot Leprechaun: Origins (2014).
