What’s New to Stream on Hulu for April 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Hulu this month!
Tragedy Girls
By  · Published on March 31st, 2018

Hulu has been stuck in the third place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are terrific gems that make Hulu a destination for more than just TV.

The complete list of new movies hitting Hulu this month — April 2018 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.

Hulu Pick of the Month

This month’s pick doesn’t actually hit Hulu until April 18th, but Tragedy Girls (2017) is well worth the wait for those of you who missed its limited theatrical run and VOD release. It’s a slasher comedy done right about two high school girls who abduct a notorious serial killer for tips only to decide they can murder just fine without him. Trouble rears its head, though, when the killer escapes. To be fair, trouble is already quite evident even before then as the girls start killing off the locals in the hopes of improving their social media following. It’s witty, bloody, smartly-written and led by the absolutely terrific duo of Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool) and Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse).

Carrie

For Horror Fans

Our pick above is for horror junkies too, but Hulu has some options for those of you wanting to look backward for your genre fix too. Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) remains a much-loved classic and one of the most popular Stephen King adaptations. No one talks about 1999’s The Rage: Carrie 2, despite it being a direct sequel, and if you’re curious why it’s also available this month. The original Friday the 13th (1980) isn’t the best the franchise has to offer, but it’s one of the good ones. And finally, the four film Wishmaster franchise (1997-2002) is also available this month. I’ll vouch for the first as it’s loaded with gory fun, but the other three are a series of diminishing returns.

Thomas Crown Affair

Remakes Can Often Be Great

Remakes often get a bad reputation despite the generalized idea having been disproved numerous times. Two very good ones hit Hulu this month starting with John McTiernan’s The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) which for my money improves quite a bit on the Norman Jewison-directed original with some slickly-entertaining suspense and thrills. Danny DeVito’s blackly comic Throw Momma From the Train (1987), meanwhile, may not be an official redo of Hitchcock’s Strangers On a Train (1951), but it’s an intentional enough riff on the plot that I’m calling it one anyway.

Gamer

The Most Divisive Film in Our Slack Channels Outside of Bone Tomahawk

FSR’s Slack channels have seen their fair share of disagreements, but none have been as outrageous as the verbal brawls between those who love Bone Tomahawk and those who know it’s a laughably-written pastiche with ridiculous dialogue, weak characters, and a cool crotch split. We recently discovered a new contender to the throne of contention, though, in the form of Gamer (2009). One member of the FSR family — I won’t say who — actually said “[Steven] Spielberg wishes he was half as good as Neveldine/Taylor.” (Of course it was Kieran Fisher.) Anyway, Gamer is on Hulu this month.
