What’s New to Stream on Amazon Prime and Shudder for June 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Amazon Prime and Shudder for June 2018!
Alone In The Dark Nightmare

Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’ve in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members. Shudder has no official connection to Amazon, but I’m one of many who watch the service via its Amazon channel — and that’s why I’m pairing them here!

The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime and Shudder this month — June 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.

Shudder Pick of the Month

Director Jack Sholder’s best-loved movie may be 1987’s The Hidden, but that’s probably because so few people have seen Alone in the Dark (1982). He takes a simple setup — crazies escape from the mental ward and tear through a small town — and delivers real scares, tension, and creepiness from beginning to end. He’s aided by a stellar cast including Martin Landau, Donald Pleasance, and Jack Palance giving terrifically unnerving performances. The movie’s been a bit tough to see over the years, so take this opportunity to be terrified and delighted in the false comfort of your own home.

Action Junkies Unite!

Prime is a getting some solid action entries this month covering everything from affecting squad thrillers with Bruce Willis (Tears of the Sun, 2003), stylish Jason Statham romps (Blitz, 2011), and goofy Arnold Schwarzenegger flicks based loosely on Stephen King novels (The Running Man, 1987). June 9th also brings one of this year’s surprises in Braven (2018). It’s a small, old-fashioned action pic with Jason Momoa fighting drug dealers in a wintry landscape, and it’s great fun.

Lesser Seen But Worth Your Time

One of the reasons I do these lists is the hope that people will find some new movie to love, and to that end I’m going to point out three 90s films that are better than their reputation suggests (provided you’ve even heard of them at all). Chinese Box (1997) sounds like something you’d find on late-night Cinemax, but it’s actually an adult drama starring Gong Li and Jeremy Irons. But yes, it’s still sexy. 2 Days in the Valley (1996) gets lumped in with the rush of movies that tried to capitalize on Pulp Fiction‘s success, and while it doesn’t reach those creative heights it delivers good, dark fun with a killer cast including Charlize Theron, Eric Stoltz, James Spader, Jeff Daniels, and more. Forces of Nature (1999) is a rom-com starring Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock, both of whom were at the top of their game at the time, and yet it bombed. It’s worth a second chance.

The Rest of Shudder

In addition to the film highlighted at the top of the page, Shudder is getting a handful more titles this month including the Richard Matheson based supernatural thriller Stir of Echoes (1999) and its unrelated sequel Stir of Echoes 2: The Homecoming (2007). Also newly available are the underwhelming Magic Magic (2013), the terrifically creepy Alice Sweet Alice (1976), and the perfectly okay slasher Night School (1981). June 4th brings John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998), Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (2003), Darren Aronofsky’s Pi (1998), and Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey (1999). June 7th It sees the arrival of Stains the Sands Red (2016) and Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics. Rounding out the month are The Quiet Earth (1985), Mark of the Devil (1970), and Shinjuku Triad Society (1995) on June 11th, the fantastic Female Prisoner Scorpion film series on June 18th, and Takashi Miike’s Dead or Alive Trilogy on June 25th. Finally, on June 28th, something called Supermax arrives, and your guess is as good as mine as to what exactly that is.
