What’s New to Stream on Amazon Prime for July 2018

Here’s what’s coming to Amazon Prime this month!
The Americans
By  · Published on July 5th, 2018

Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’ve in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.

The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — July 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.

Amazon Prime Pick of the Month

When someone recommends a movie for you to watch it’s typically an investment of a mere two hours, but television shows are a whole other beast meaning most of us respond with a “thank you” and the knowledge that we’ll never actually start the series. I say that in the hopes that you won’t be like me and will instead heed my advice to watch The Americans. It follows a Russian couple who came to America decades prior to start a family and present as American-born citizens with normal lives and jobs while actually serving as deadly efficient spies for their homeland. The series just ended — beautifully — and the final season lands on Amazon Prime starting July 29th. The show’s a Cold War thriller blending masterfully with themes involving family, friendships, and the interactions that determine who we truly are. It’s also thrilling, sexy, and frequently suspenseful, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more exciting and satisfying drama.

Perfect Movies

Zodiac

I know what you’re thinking. Perfect movies?! Impossible! But these unicorns do exist, I promise, and three of them are new to Amazon Prime this month. David Fincher’s Zodiac (2007) remains the director’s most flawless work and captivates with every frame of its serial killer tale. Peter Weir’s Witness (1985) is a softer, more hopeful dramatic thriller, but its story of a city cop (Harrison Ford) immersed in the world of an Amish community is every bit as mesmerizing. And if death and murder aren’t your speed may I suggest Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles (1974) as an eternally reliable comedy classic?

Horrific Comedies and Comedic Horrors!

Killer Clowns From Outer Space

Horror/comedies are a tough business as the perfect balance between the two is something of an extreme rarity in the wild. Think An American Werewolf in London or Return of the Living Dead. Most, though, tend to tilt heavier towards the comedic side with mixed results. Two examples that lean towards laughs but still manage to be great fun are hitting Amazon Prime this month. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) is as ludicrous as the title suggests, but it’s also an insane amount of fun for viewers in the mood. The comedy is broad as hell too, but if it’s your speed the laughs and the stellar clown prosthetics will make you a fan for life. The Monster Squad (1987) already has its rabid fan base, and if you caught the film as a kid it’s easy to see why. It’s almost The Goonies meets the Universal Monsters, and while it’s very much an 80s kids movie — hello mindless homophobia! — it’s a fun watch.

Sequelitus

American Psycho Mila Kunis

I typically try to focus on the good to great titles, but sometimes curiosity is a powerful motivator when it comes to picking something to watch. For those of you in that boat I’m happy to point you in the direction of two sequels you may have missed — starting with one you were smart to miss. American Psycho II: All American Girl (2002) is a direct sequel to the masterful original, and it’s all downhill after a small child kills Patrick Bateman in the opening few minutes. Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) is less of a clusterfuck but still a mediocrity compared to the fun and style of the original despite featuring the same talents both on and off screen.
