Here’s what’s coming to Netflix this month!
Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.
The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — February 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.
The Big One
Duncan Jones’ Moon remains a terrific example of imagination and talent being more important than budget, and while he’s had his ups (Source Code) and downs (Warcraft) since one film has remained at the front of his mind. Happily, Mute (available 2/23) is heading to our minds (via our eyeballs and ears) this month too. Alexander Skarsgard, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux are our guides through a beautiful-looking sci-fi world, and it’s easily the title most worthy of loud attention this month.
So Many Originals!
As is increasingly the case this month is loaded with Netflix Originals, both shows and movies, and while Mute is the highest profile title some of the others still stand out. Altered Carbon (available 2/2) is a new series based on Richard Morgan’s bestselling sci-fi novel, and it looks like a slick and trippy good time. The first season of a new Queer Eye (available 2/7) series is debuting too, and while I doubt it’ll catch the same kind of pop culture wave as the original it could be a fun watch. He’s no Barack Obama, but George Clooney’s up next on the second episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman (available 2/9). Finally, a new horror film from David Bruckner is hitting the service, and I’m happy to say The Ritual (available 2/9) is worth a watch for fans of weirdos, monsters, and brutal demises.
Hours to Kill
Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is obviously his best film, but it’s hard to argue with the one-two punch of Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2. Brilliant action, a highly entertaining sense of style, and a hell of a lot of fun make for a wildly satisfying good time. Those of you who like your comedy with a heavy dose of frustration might enjoy Meet the Parents and its follow-up Meet the Fockers. Thos of you who like your action and laughs mixed together, meanwhile, may want to settle in for Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen. They’re far from consistent across the trilogy, but it’s never dull.
Pastries Beware
Look, we’ve all thought about sticking our giblets in a warm apple pie, but only one film was brave enough to portray it onscreen. 1999’s American Pie is a funny “teen-sex” comedy that still holds up, and it was followed by three direct sequels and four — four! — direct-to-DVD spinoffs. Five of the films are hitting Netflix including the original, American Pie 2, American Pie Presents: Band Camp, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, and American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile.
