Here’s what’s coming to Amazon Prime this month!

Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’ve in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.

The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — August 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.

Amazon Prime Pick of the Month

Adrian Lyne’s filmography is best remembered for his numerous ruminations on sex and its repercussions — Fatal Attraction (1987), 9 1/2 Weeks (1986), Unfaithful (2002), Indecent Proposal (1993) — but for my money his best film is 1990’s Jacob’s Ladder. Written by Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, 1990), the film is a dark feast of nightmarish visuals and heavy themes of guilt, grief, and loss. It’s also utterly beautiful, though, and made extra special by Tim Robbins’ lead performance.

Swordplay!

Black Rain

Guns may be America’s weapon of choice, but sometimes only a long, sharp piece of steel can do the job right. American Ninja (1985) and American Ninja III: Blood Hunt (1989) may feature different American ninjas, but their hearts are in the same place when it comes to slicing and dicing their way through baddies. Neither film is “great fun” necessarily, but they’re the kind of fun that only Cannon can provide. Ridley Scott’s Black Rain (1989), by contrast, is a fantastic flick filled with slick and stylish visuals, sharp action, and a strong theme of honor.

A Few Hours to Kill?

Species

Sometimes you want more than a ninety-minute diversion, and when the urge for something more hits Amazon Prime has you covered with a handful of movies and their sequels. Get Shorty (1995) and Be Cool (2005) are worlds apart when it comes to quality, but after enjoying the comedic brilliance of the first film you might be interested to see where the characters go next. Species (1995) is a terrifically fun B-movie with a big budget blending sci-fi, horror, and a little bit of camp. Its sequels, Species II (1998) and Species III (2004), are lesser beasts in every way, but there’s fun to be had. Stir of Echoes (1999), from the Richard Matheson source novel, is a haunting tale with a solid Kevin Bacon performance. Stir of Echoes 2: The Homecoming (2007) stars Rob Lowe. And finally, I’m wholly unable to find myself on the same tonal wavelength as Teen Wolf (1985) and Teen Wolf Too (1987), but I know they have their fans.

The Most Anticipated Series Debut of the Month!

Jack Ryan John Krasinski

It doesn’t actually land until August 31st, but we’re understandably excited for the first season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. The character has always been an interesting one — whether portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, or even Ben Affleck — and John Krasinski promises more of the same. He’s a strong actor and has already proven his action chops (13 Hours), and giving Ryan more room to breathe across nine episodes is promising.
