Qyburn Gets Tossed Aside

Bells Byeburn

Maester Frankenstein, a.k.a. the Actual Worst Mistake Robb Stark Ever Made™, finally got murdered—and by his own creation, in classic mad scientist fashion. His ending is brutal, unmourned, and just the tiniest bit funny in its abruptness. Sometimes people do get what they deserve, and it’s truly wonderful.

Bells Cleganebowl

We waited for 8 SEASONS for this moment. And while honestly, the editing of the actual fight was a little jumpy for my taste—I personally prefer it when the actual battle choreography conveys the aggressive chaos of the fight as opposed to rapid-fire cutting—I’ll take what I can get. (That said, making everyone flashback to the trauma of Oberyn Martell’s death with that eye gouging bit was totally not cool, seriously why was that necessary.)

Arya in the Aftermath

Bells Arya

Putting Arya on the ground for the razing of King’s Landing works spectacularly well in terms of raising the stakes and packing an emotional punch. Her efforts to save the city’s civilians end up failing tragically, and the episode’s biggest gut punch comes as she looks around horrified at the devastation caused by the dragon she first looked upon with such wonder and is ultimately brought to tears by the sight of the charred remains of a mother-daughter pair she had tried to save. Direct hit straight to the heart, tear ducts successfully activated.
