The ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Trailer, Explained

“The Great War is coming.” Also Winter. And Dragons. And horse-lord parkour.

4. Ah yes, The North

It wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without some broody Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and some machinations from Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen). You’ll also notice in the Winterfell-set shots below that Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) has escaped the trash compactor (sorry, Riverlands — wrong massive pop culture phenomenon currently churning up its marketing machine).

Jon Snow also has some words with Littlefinger in what appears to be the crypts below Winterfell.

Too dark? Let’s lighten it up a bit:

There we go. Oh, whose statue is that behind them? Lyanna Stark. We all remember her. She was revealed at the very end of season 6 to be Jon’s real mother. Is Littlefinger about to reveal to Jon that he’s really a Secret Targaryen/Stark hybrid hero? Or is he simply about to get his sniveling face punched because he’s trying to pit Sansa (Sophie Turner) against her half-brother/cousin? It could be all of these things.

And to answer our question about Arya from 800 words ago, it appears as if either (a) she’s headed further North or (b) it’s getting very cold in the South. The former is most likely, as we’re due for another amazing reunion between Starks. This time, it could be between two Starks that had actually spoken to each other on screen.

Hopefully, we get said reunion before Jon Snow has to run along with Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) to what appears to be north of or very near The Wall. Because this…

And this…

Don’t look like friendly scenarios for our mildly undead hero.

5. One last mystery…

Whose hand is this? Could this be the trailer’s little peek at the fate of Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)? It’s certainly possible, as the hand it looking pretty gross. Perhaps this is before he finds a cure and rides back to heroically sweep Daenerys off her feet with his rugged, Greyscale-free good looks?

A girl can dream.

In Summation

What this trailer promises us is that the Great War is coming. But first, there will be plenty of action. Horse-lords killing Lannisters, dragons killing Lannisters, Arya Starks killing Lannisters (probably), and eunuchs killing Lannisters (both overtly and covertly, thanks to Varys). Everybody is going to be killing Lannisters. Even other Lannisters.

In summation, Cersei is so screwed.
