‘Foxcatcher’ Teaser Trailer: Channing Tatum Wants An Oscar Very Badly

Sony Pictures Classics

“Hello, Oscar voters, Channing Tatum here. Yes, hello, it’s nice to speak to you, too. No, I will not be appearing in Step Up: All In. No, no cameo. I swear. I know I’ve done it before, but there was just no time for this one. I am sorry. That’s really nice that you love dance movies, but I am here to talk to you about something else. No, not Matthew McConaughey. Not his Oscar. ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT. Happy? Let’s get to it. My Oscar. No, no, I don’t want to wait until next March. I’d like it now. No, right now. I know Foxcatcher hasn’t even been released yet, but I think that I’ve got a little something for you that might sway your opinion.

Here, take a look, then let’s talk about that little gold man.”

Me, winning! America, winning! Take that, mirror!

Yes, that’s a brand new teaser for Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher – and a hell of a one at that – and it certainly reminds us that this is a film about Acting with a capital “A.” There’s a lot of acting in this movie, but most of it looks to be pretty damn good, which is probably why the film itself is already racking up the accolades. Our own William Goss saw the film at Cannes, where he noted that the film’s “deftly realized performances” are one of its biggest highlights and best attributes. Acting! There’s a lot of it! But is it Oscar caliber acting? Is Tatum finally going to get the acting nods he’s been steadily work towards for years now? We’ll just have to wait and see, but no one ever put their head through a mirror or punched themselves in the face on camera while hoping to not get an Oscar, so let’s put Tatum on our “big possible” list and move on.

Tonally, this new teaser fits right in line with the first look we got at the film back in May, with an equally as haunting teaser trailer that focused on Steve Carell’s murderous John du Pont (who, sorry, still looks like a human version of his Despicable Me character Gru). While that trailer played up the tension of what we all know is coming – Foxcatcher is based on a true story, so no, there will be no spoiler alerts ahead – that du Pont, a millionaire obsessed with bringing athletic glory back to the United States in the form of his rigorously worked out wrestling team, is going to go totally nuts during the course of the film and eventually kill off the brother of Tatum’s character (real life Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz), another high caliber wrestler named Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo).

This trailer gives us not just a deep look at Tatum’s apparent drive, but also Mark’s drive, a desire to win that pushes him to the brink, and puts him in the path of the insane du Pont. Ruffalo is on the edges here, but it’s compelling that when we do see him, he seems perplexed and bothered by the intensity that both du Pont and his own baby brother are bringing to their mission. Hey, instincts are a cool thing.

Also, considering that we’ve seen both a Carell-heavy and a Tatum-centric teaser, how about one more, focused on Ruffalo’s character? We’ve seen precious little from him so far, and we’d love to get a better sense of how his Dave reacts to du Pont, his brother and Team Foxcatcher at large.

Foxcatcher will open on November 14th.
