First Pic of ‘Sucky Teen Romance’ Needs a Blood Bib

Having seen both of Emily Hagins’s films – Pathogen and The Retelling – I can firmly say that while there is a spark of potential in both, the amateur nature of both is what shines through the most. Of course, both films come with the caveat of being made by a teenager, but it’s clear that the films are low-budget learning processes.

That’s why I was taken aback by the first image that’s emerged from her new film, My Sucky Teen Romance.

With a slightly bigger budget and some bigger names in the Austin film scene at her side, the look of the film has jumped from a young girl borrowing her mom’s camera to a young filmmaker making a mark.

In the effort of full disclosure, I’m friends with Hagins and have hung out with her on a few occasions, but there’s no denying that the look of this vampire baddie is formidable.

The make-up effects were done by All The Boys Love Mandy Lane and Machete talent Doug Field with Susan Benson.

There’s nothing like a little professionalism to up the ante.

The flick is scheduled to wrap next month, and, like all other indies, has no release date currently in sight. The first photo is promising, but we’ll have to wait until some intrepid festival coordinator or theater chain runner or indie horror studio arm picks it up to see if Hagins’s story about vampires hiding in plain sight at a sci-fi convention delivers the goods. Until then, we have Vampire’s Suck to fulfill our need for Twilight mockery, random Mini-Me jokes, and appearances by the Kardashians.

For some reason, I’m hungry for raspberry-grape jelly.

What do you think?
