Movie News After Dark
The day’s top headlines in bite-size portions.
With all the hype mounting around Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, you might have forgotten there’s another sci-fi noir set in a dystopic future not too far from our present coming out this year: Duncan Moon’s Mute, which the director has described as a kind of thematic sequel to Moon. Set in Berlin, Germany in 2052, so three years after Villeneuve’s flick, Mute is the story of Leo (Alexander Skarsgard, Tarzan), a mute bartender on the trail of his missing girlfriend. As he searches the city he learns there’s a link between her and a pair of American surgeons (Justin Theroux, The Girl on the Train and Paul Rudd, Ant-Man).
Entertainment Weekly has three exclusive photos from the film – the first ever – and in them each of the main characters are revealed, as is the future-Berlin, which looks a helluva lot like the future L.A. of Blade Runner. This is, of course, an awesome thing. Check out the photos:
Skarsgard looks the epitome of sci-fi noir cool, Justin Theroux looks ridiculous in that wig, and I don’t know what I love more about the Rudd photo: the fact that he’s holding a martini glass while wearing blood-smudged scrubs, or that bitchin’ mustache. This movie’s gonna be spectacular. No firm release date is set, but this is a Netflix original – score, by the way – and is reportedly set to hit the streaming service sometime later this year. We’ll let you know.
Months before he suits up to fight baddies in Justice League, huge human being Jason Momoa is heading to Frontier, a new Netflix original series set in the apparently super-violent and ruthlessly-brutal fur trade of 18th century Canada. Momoa plays Declan Harp, who based on how the other characters feel about him is either the boogeyman or the devil incarnate. There are only six episodes set to air, but already the series has been renewed for a second season. If the first looks at Tom Hardy’s Taboo float your boat, or you’re still holding out hope for that mythical Deadwood movie, this one will probably float your boat. Check out the first trailer below, and tune in January 20th – just two short weeks from now – when all of Frontier season one will be available to stream.
If you’re not excited about Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s new Predator movie – The Predator – coming out early next year, then see a doctor because you might be dead. Besides promising a brutal story that doesn’t reboot but updates the franchise – parts 1 and 2 will be acknowledged in the new film – director Black has been amassing an amazing cast, which this week added two more incredible performers.
Already we knew Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) and Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) were going to be the leads as an ex-Marine and scientist, respectively, fighting off the alien menace, but now word’s come that sketch comedy star Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) and Moonlight breakout Trevante Rhodes will be suiting up for action as well. No word if Arnold or Danny Glover are making an appearance, but I mean, come on, you gotta do it…
March 2nd, 2018 is the release date. Mark your calendars now.
That’s it for this week. Happy viewing this weekend and we’ll see you back her eMonday for more Movie News After Dark.
