25 Years of Fan Casting ‘X-Men’ Movies

Since the very early years of the internet, we’ve been suggesting ideas for Marvel’s mutant superheroes.

In nearly 20 years, we have had multiple actors portraying the core X-Men characters on the big screen in a single continuity. Only one, however, has played Logan, aka Wolverine. Excluding the kid playing a younger version of the clawed Canuck, that is. Now, with that actor, Hugh Jackman, retired from the role, and with a complete mutant reboot assumed following Disney’s acquisition of Fox and all its film franchises, new possibilities are being proposed by fans. Whether serious or not, Danny DeVito (via petition) and Keanu Reeves (due to his own professed desire) are among those most wished to don the sideburns — and maybe, this time, a faithful costume.

As Dark Phoenix seems to be closing the book on the X-Men movies begun back in 2000 (who knows how linked The New Mutants will be if or when it ever comes out?), I have become nostalgic not for the dozen installments of the franchise but for a time before that first movie was cast. In the summer of 1994, I went away to a pre-college program between my junior and senior years of high school. Although I was technically there to study art, I also discovered the Internet for the first time and spent way too many hours in a computer lab primarily engulfed in Usenet newsgroup correspondence. And as a teen who spent all his earnings on comic books, including all of Marvel’s X-titles, anything having to do with X-Men was my main focus.

That year, producer Lauren Shuler Donner acquired the film rights to the X-Men comics (following some developments with James Cameron set to produce and Kathryn Bigelow to direct for Carolco) and thanks to reports at the time, we were under the impression her husband, Superman helmer Richard Donner, would direct from a script by Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker. Official casting — or even rumored prospects — wouldn’t be revealed for almost five years. In April 1999, Reeves admitted in an interview that he’d had a meeting about X-Men but wasn’t sure he’d be a good fit (for which role, it’s not clear). While DeVito was likely never legitimately considered for Wolverine 20 years ago (although supposedly Stan Lee wanted him in the role?), his body type wasn’t far off — the first dream candidate named for the role, according to legendary X-Men comics writer Chris Claremont, was Bob Hoskins, when Bigelow was at the helm.

Despite Hoskins’ name not likely being known as in the mix when it was, he was one of many guys suggested by fans for Wolverine in the newsgroups. As was DeVito. Reeves, though, was fan-cast for Gambit. All three actors were on the roster years before I ever even got to pre-college. I can find them mentioned at least as early as November 1992. That’s around when a University of North Dakota student (or faculty member?) named David R. Henry got sick of the same thread being created by newbies week after week and began compiling all the names suggested for all the various X-title characters to eventually post as part of the FAQ for rec.arts.comics.xbooks.

When I arrived on the digital scene, these lists were long, collecting everyone you could ever think of for each X-role, dead or alive, correctly spelled or not, listed by name or not (this was a time before IMDb was even well-known as the Cardiff Internet Movie Database and there weren’t a lot of resources for looking up names of actors and actresses or Flock of Seagulls singers). During my six weeks at pre-college, I either posted fewer times than I thought, or some of my messages were deleted or otherwise not archived, and I can’t find many of my own casting suggestions. I did predict in August 1994, however, that because of the popularity of X-Men: The Animated Series, the main characters of the movie would be: Xavier, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Beast, Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Magneto. Seven out of 10 wasn’t too bad.

I may have endorsed the idea of Winona Ryder (my favorite actress at the time) portraying Jubilee (my favorite character at the time), but that was already part of Henry’s compilation. In his intro, he acknowledged that many people were getting further and further away from the right age, if they were ever the at all (Mercedes Ruehl for Kitty Pryde), and that some suggestions were possibly in jest (RuPaul as Storm — or maybe this was progressive thinking for the mid-’90s?), but he avoided anything that was totally out of mockery of the whole thing. Most of the ideas were too A-list for what would be a modestly budgeted ensemble comic book movie (Tom Cruise was never going to be Cyclops).

In fact, X-Men went with a number of relative unknowns for its cast, so back in 1994, we fans weren’t on the money with many of them. The closest bet was Patrick Stewart, who despite being one of a dozen candidates for Professor X, was regularly recognized as a favorite. After all, he’s a good actor and he was already bald. Halle Berry was on the list of possibilities for Storm, though so were most other famous black actresses, including apparently early official candidate Angela Bassett and both Janet Jackson and LaToya Jackson. Sifting through newsgroup messages, supermodel Iman seems to have been the most popular contender. Interestingly enough, one of the movie’s main characters, Mystique, wasn’t discussed much by the casting agent wannabes. There was only one person in mind for the shapeshifter: Faye Dunaway.

While I don’t seem to have made any suggestions that weren’t already on Henry’s list, there was one time when I responded to the idea of Phil Collins playing Wolverine, which was followed with a suggestion for Sting as Archangel, with joke picks for a movie musical starring only famous recording artists. I added Peter Gabriel as Cyclops, Tori Amos as Jean Grey, Tina Turner as Storm (she was on the master list anyway), Michael Bolton as Iceman, Edie Brickell as Rogue, Paul Simon as Beast, and Kenny G. as Gambit. But it’s not like other fans weren’t genuine with their singer choices. Glenn Danzig was always popular for Wolverine (he even made Wizard magazine’s dream cast in 1995), while Prince was a favorite for Nightcrawler and Reba McEntire was regularly named for Rogue. And you thought the Internet was bad today.

When I left pre-college at the end of summer, I returned to a life of no computers and no internet, at least until I went away to actual college and there were more web pages and then chat rooms and other areas to explore (I also may not have been as into comic books, partly due to lack of money to buy them). Rather than posting the FAQ list as it existed at my final viewing, though, I figured I’d share the full roster as it turned out, as far as I can find, as the final version posted by another fan in February 1997. I’ve kept the bad spellings (though most were cleaned up by this time) and other notes as they were 22 years ago (though I did change one non-PC word). For a laugh and a wonder of what if:
