Ewan McGregor Joining Tom Hanks in Angels & Demons

Ewan McGregor is joining Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code prequel/sequel Angels and Demons. With a much better storyline, this Hanks/McGregor combo could prove to be better than the first flick.

If you haven’t read Angels & Demons, which is sometimes better known as “The other Dan Brown book” (even though he’s written several). It’s actually a much more engaging storyline than The Da Vinci Code, and also involves secret societies, religion, and symbols hidden in artwork. It was announced today that Ewan McGregor will be joining the cast, which so far is pretty much just Tom Hanks and female lead Ayelet Zurer.

McGregor will be playing a Vatican insider who assistant Hanks’ Robert Langdon. It’s been awhile since I read this book, and I can’t remember if that’s supposed to be Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca (who seems slightly too old), or one of the Vatican’s Swiss Guards. Time will tell. What’s really cool about this book is that it involves highly explosive antimatter and ambigrams, which are words that look the same upside down. (Check out the main image for an example).

This film was supposed to be out in December of this year, but the writer’s strike ended up pushing it back to May of next year. If that waiting means we end up getting Ewan McGregor (instead of the rumored Orlando Bloom), then by all means. Exploding antimatters, a doomsday device with a countdown, strange symbols, murders, hidden clues in the Vatican? Toss in Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor (what a cool teamup) and I’m in like Flynn. Let’s just hope Hanks doesn’t sport the lame haircut from The Da Vinci Code in this one.
