It’s been over two years since The End of the F***ing World premiered to rapturous reviews, and fans have eagerly awaited the aftermath of the series’ shocking finale. There’s been much debate about the need or desire for a second season of the show, which so far has been about two English teen runaways who wind up on the run. Arguments against its continuation often invoke the finality of its source material (a graphic novel of the same name by Charles Forman), but writer Charlie Covell has prepared eight more episodes that are sure to surprise. The tone of the show seems much different than it was in 2017, but we’ll have to wait until it premieres on November 4th to know for certain if that’s truly the case.

Netflix recently released a trailer for the hit series, and the comments section on YouTube is abuzz with fan theories and strong opinions about the second season, as well as collective anguish over revelations about the fate of one of its lead characters. Watch it below and then continue on for our detailed shot-by-shot breakdown.

Set to Graham Coxon’s cover of “White Wedding,” the trailer focuses primarily on Jessica Barden’s character, Alyssa, who was last seen screaming on a beach as the police cornered her runaway lover, James (Alex Lawther). The screen cut to black as a gunshot rang out, and viewers have been patiently awaiting the outcome of that cliffhanger ever since.

After Netflix posted a promotional photo featuring Alyssa in a white dress sitting across from an urn, fans quickly inferred the image’s implications and mourned the likable sociopath. This first trailer does little to assuage fears about James’ survival as we see the immediate aftermath of that shooting in its first 10 seconds.

We open on Alyssa in her bed, seemingly ruminating on the highs and lows of her short-lived relationship with James.

A memorable moment of our Bonnie & Clyde taking solace in each other’s presence as they lie together on the beach.

This is the happiest we see Alyssa in this entire trailer.

It’s also one of the sole instances of James smiling in the whole first season.

We’re brought back to the dramatic second-to-last shot of Season 1. Alyssa screams after James as he runs across the vast beach.

Only this time, we see what happened to him as an aerial shot shows James bleeding from his abdomen as Alyssa runs over to help.

Crashing back to the present, Alyssa — now a brunette again — looks at herself in a bathroom mirror with an affectless stare.

Blood drains out of the sink.

From a car’s side-view mirror, we see her in the same white dress from the promotional pictures.

It’s clear that she’s trying on wedding dresses, but the biggest question is who is she’s preparing to wed.
