Dick Miller’s finest hour as an actor will be on TCM tonight. Just let that sink in before we get to the main story. Dick Miller in A BUCKET OF BLOOD + TCM = Cancel your plans and get ready for good watching.
The icing on the cinematic cake? This is one of four films on TCM tonight that will be hosted by Roger Corman as my favorite cable channel pays tribute to American International Pictures (AIP) throughout the month of May. You can’t really understate the importance of this studio. Although they made films fast and cheap with the sole intent of packaging them as double-bills for the drive-in, they were fun as hell, and some of them became legitimate classics. It was here that Corman learned not only how to make films, but how to produce and sell films. It was here that directors like Scorsese, Coppola, and Bogdanovich got their starts. It was here that actors like Nicholson and DeNiro got their breaks. It was here, that a new Hollywood was born.
This May, there are going to be amazing stories paired with amazing films every Thursday. Tonight’s films begin at 5:00 pm PST with THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (1954) followed by THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES, A BUCKET OF BLOOD (Dick Miller and the storied beginning of Walter Paisley), and finally HIGH SCHOOL HELL CATS.
If tonight gets you in a Dick Miller kind of mood, make sure to check out Elijah Drenner’s THAT GUY DICK MILLER (which I was lucky enough to help with) for more on one of the most beloved character actors in the history of Hollywood.
Set a reminder for each Thursday this month. This is must-watch TV. Enjoy.
