Miniature Is the Fad in First ‘Downsizing’ Trailer

Alexander Payne shrinks Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig.

The Earth is in trouble. We use way too many resources given our population and there needs to be a solution. Lucky for us, director Alexander Payne is on the job. Payne, famous for films such as Sideways and Nebraska, has a brand new feature that is a wild new take on the word Downsizing. Downsizing typically is associated with businesses and the letting go of personal, but this new film takes Downsizing literally. Giving off similar vibes as other Science-Fiction features such as Being John Malkovich or Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Downsizing is about people trying to save money by shrinking themselves to a fraction of their original size.

The story of Downsizing finds normal every man Paul (played here by Matt Damon) trying to make a better future for his family. Paul and his wife Audrey (Kristin Wiig) are having a tough time with work and making ends meet. Luckily for them, a brand new technology has been invented that will solve all their problems. They will never be able to return to their original size, but life will be much better taking up a smaller footprint of the Earth. Paul and Audrey have their financials explained to them and the trailer and it seems that their life savings are worth so much more in this new small world.

When things are too good to be true, they usually are. Alexander Payne doesn’t give away all of his secrets in this trailer, but Paul and Audrey might live to regret their decision to shrink. Alexander Payne’s movies have always been in the Oscar conversation and although critics seem hot and cold on Downsizing following its premiere at both Venice and TIFF, Payne doing Science-Fiction is a must see.

Downsizing hits theaters December 22, 2017.
