From naughty, hidden messages in animated films to the Catholic League boycotting the company’s social tolerance of homosexuality, The Mouse is no stranger to controversy, and it looks like they are hopping right back into the fire with their latest development.
Walt Disney is probably rolling over in his cryogenic freeze chamber with the news that Disney will be producing Scott Rudin’s Synchronicity, a flashy, buddy-comedy that exposes the dark world of the world’s most controversial sport: Synchronized Swimming.
Okay, so there’s nothing actual controversial or sexy about swimming in organized, rhythmic patterns with a dozen other people, but it was either drum up fake controversy or make the entire news post about how The Mouse is about five years too late to hop on the sport parody gravy train.
Still, they probably have Will Ferrell on speed dial.
The Hollywood Reporter is Hollywood reporting that the deal is in the works, but there’s no details on who will be starring, when the project is slated for or basically anything else. Essentially, all we know to look out for is another sports-related mockery that will probably play as if they melted the ice from Blades of Glory and gave Will Ferrell nose plugs.
On a side note, please don’t sign up for this movie, Mr. Ferrell.
All spite aside, Disney and Rudin both have a solid track record of bringing great films to theaters. It does seem a little weird for him to go from No Country for Old Men to this, but the guy has about a dozen projects in the works so we should be seeing a lot more from him in the next few years.
And, in an unusual praise of THR, I have to give credit for referencing the synchronized swimming skit from Saturday Night Live featuring Marting Short and Harry Shearer. Now that I think about it, that’s two fantastic actors for the as-yet-unnamed leading roles. Put them on speed dial, Disney.
