Our society has a hunger for zombie movies. An unquenchable craving that drives us to consume and consume yet never be sated. But who knows- maybe one more zombie movie and we’ll finally be full.
And one more zombie movie is what we’re getting. Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell, two of the producers behind this year’s Texas Chainsaw 3D, have acquired the rights to remake George Romero’s 1985 Day of the Dead. The original tells of a few huddled military personnel hiding out in a bunker after the zombie apocalypse has already ravaged the Earth beyond repair. According to the LA Times, Grobman and Campbell plan to stay faithful to that original story.
“We want to keep it as close to the Romero version as possible,” says Campbell, “to make sure that his fans are happy. These are not going to be zombies climbing walls and doing back flips like in World War Z.”
Bold words. But can Grobman and Campbell live up to them? Romero fans will certainly remember 2008’s remake of Day of the Dead, a direct-to-DVD dud starring Mena Suvari and Nick Cannon (and if you’re wondering: yes, you do get to see Nick Cannon get eaten). And while Texas Chainsaw 3D made decent box office, it was universally panned. The minds behind this remake would be wise to remember that.
The remake is reported to have a budget of $10m-$20m and will be released in 2014.
