After acquiring the rights to The Damned last August, Dreamworks has hired on David DiGilio to write the script.

This is weird news.

For those unfamiliar with the graphic novel, it is a beautiful, dark underworld of crime and demons. It blends the supernatural with organized crime, following rival demon families that deal in rum running, gambling and the usual grift. It’s gritty in the way The Godfather would be if Don Corleone was actually from Hell. Or could send you there. Or just make your life a literal living one. All in all, it’s a fantastic book.

So it’s weird to hear that DiGilio has been given scribe duties. His only big screen work was with Disney’s Eight Below which seems leagues away from where The Damned should be. Paul Walker smiling goofily through sugary sweet adversity with a pack of intrepid sled dogs in the snow is on the other side of the planet from where Satan-spawn mobsters will make your flesh boil on your face if you miss your monthly protection payment.

DiGilio was also involved with an ABC show called “Traveler” that, I admit, I’ve never heard of. According to my best friend IMDB, it’s about two men on the lam from the FBI after a terrorist bombing of a museum. Still, this seems like brand new territory for the writer. It will be interesting to see whether he can pull it off.

On the other hand, watching Eight Below made me feel like my face was boiling, so maybe Dreamworks is headed in the right direction here.
