DAN HARMON BROUGHT IN TO WRITE SCENES FOR ‘DOCTOR STRANGE’

Wubba lubba dub dub! Marvel continues to showcase their creativity with another unique choice – this time in the form of Dan Harmon. Per The Hollywood Reporter the COMMUNITY creator was tabbed recently to offer a little last-minute punch up on DOCTOR STRANGE. According to the report Harmon was brought in “for additional photography” that took place after the film wrapped.

If you’re at all concerned about the idea of re-shoots and the addition of a new writer this late in production of DOCTOR STRANGE (the film is due out in November), don’t be. This is perfectly normal and it’s not like they’re bringing in some hack to join a 10-man writing crew. The film was written by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill based on a story by Jon Spaihts. Marvel is working with a small crew and they’ve brought in an established writer.

THR does point out that Harmon doesn’t have a lot of experience with film, mostly being relegated to TV comedies to this point, so in that regard he does strike as an odd choice on some level. At this point Marvel has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their decision making. The THR report also indicates that Harmon has zero experience writing for superheroes and to this point I must disagree.

In the traditional sense Harmon hasn’t done any superhero work, this is true. But he did pen the pilot for HEAT VISION AND JACK, a Ben Still directed action-comedy starring Jack Black as an astronaut who flies too close to the sun resulting in the expansion of his mind making him the smartest man in the world. Along with his talking motorcycle Heat Vision, Jack does battle with supernatural forces. If Harmon can write that I think he’ll be a fine addition to the world of superheroes.
