Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse battle it out to decide which kind of electrical plug you’d be using.

There is no shortage of films opening at the Toronto Independent Film Festival this year. Each one is buoying for high ticket sales, strong word of mouth, and superb reviews. Perhaps one company that needs a hit more than others is The Weinstein Company that is hoping their new film electrifies audiences.

The Current War stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon as rivals Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse vying for the power in the electricity market. Edison, known as the man who invented the light bulb, has grand plans for the future of electricity and imagines it in every home powering essentials to our way of living. Westinghouse sees that grand opportunity and wants to get into that market at whatever cost. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult as Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla.

Since the trailer was released the film has screened in Toronto. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, whose first film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl stole Sundance but opened poorly, has decided to aim on the side of a flashy film as opposed to a stuffy biopic. There doesn’t seem to be a winning performance in the bunch which is a bit disappointing since this first trailer does a great job of amping up the rivalry between the two men. There is little doubt a lot of resources will be put into the PR campaign for The Current War given The Weinstein Company behind it, but unfortunately it looks as though it will live and die on how much you would like to see Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison.

The Current War opens November 24th, 2017.
