The Academy Award winning super hero is now directing a movie.
Brie Larson, the Oscar-winning actress who is set to play Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, can now add “director” to her long list of credits as she makes her directorial debut in the independent comedy Unicorn Store. As THR reports, Larson will also star and produce the quirky indie film alongside David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer through their banner The District. Written by Samantha McInty, the film revolves around a woman who moves back in with her parents and receives a “mysterious invitation to a store that will test her idea of what it really means to grow up.”
It’s a great move for the talented young actress who has shown tremendous promise with her already impressive career. Though this will be Larson’s first time to direct a feature, she has written and directed short films in the past including The Arm, which won the jury prize at Sundance in 2012. She is following up her Academy Award for Best Actress win for Room last year with notable roles in Legendary’s upcoming big budget blockbuster Kong: Skull Island, and in the coming-of-age drama The Glass Castle, which reunites her with her Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton. To cap it all off, the 2016 BFI London Film Festival recently announced it will close with the Larson-starring thriller Free Fire directed by Ben Wheatley.
Larson will be sitting in the director’s chair for Unicorn Store prior to suiting up for her role as Captain Marvel, which is scheduled to release on March 8, 2019. While she has plenty of time to prep for the super hero flick, she was recently spotted studying for her role by reading a Captain Marvel comic book while in costume. Larson’s role as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers was a positively received surprise at this past Comic-Con. She joins an impressive lineup of up-and-coming Marvel and DC super heroes including The Black Panther and Wonder Woman.

This has all been a long time coming for Larson, who has been starring in films and television shows since she was nine years old. As a teenager, she was praised for her performance in the 2006 comedy film Hoot. She played notable supporting roles in 21 Jump Street (2012), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), and in the television series United States of Tara (2009–2011). But it was her breakthrough performance in the independent drama Short Term 12 for which she received critical acclaim. Her moving performance as a young mother in Room garnered her several awards including the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Critic’s Choice Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress.
Larson has been able to balance commercial projects with artistic pursuits throughout her young but storied career, and Unicorn Store is no doubt something that falls in the latter category. She is clearly looking to make her mark not just as an actress, but as a producer and director. If she continues to make bold movies in a diverse array of projects like these, there is no doubt she will have a long and even more successful career ahead.
