Bloody Brilliant: ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ Gets a New Teaser Trailer, ‘From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series’ Coming to a TV Near You
You know, it must really be a new year and a new day if we have information about two vampire-related projects coming down the pipeline and they’re both instantly labeled as must-sees and don’t immediately make everyone utter a collective “ugh” on sight. There’s nary a sparkle abound for 2014.
First up is a film in which Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston are undead British rock star lovers, something that none of us had ever really formulated into so many words, but subconsciously, realize that it makes way too much sense. Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive – our 24th most anticipated movie of 2014 – is the story of a depressed vampire rocker (Hiddleston) who is just fed up with this modern world and its ever-changing technology. Luckily, he has his beautiful, understanding wife to console him with blood popsicles and shots, followed by some listless trance dancing. Normal couple stuff. A visit after 87 years of peace from bratty younger sister Mia Wasikowska is just another inconvenience in their life of style.
Though the new teaser is just a brief glimpse of their long, long lives, it shows a dark and wryly funny film that takes the “sexy vampire” genre and nails it into the ground. The brooding and sulking and writhing around while wearing vaguely gothic clothing? Got it. Now they’re rock stars, too.
A more familiar story to the genre is From Dusk Till Dawn, the 1996 film from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino that featured George Clooney, Harvey Keitel and Tarantino facing down a bar full of vampires in one of the largest domino effect of poor choices ever witnessed on film. Now, we’ll get to see those battles play out over and over again in a weekly format through Rodriguez’s newly-launched El Rey network: From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is coming to a TV near you on March 11.
Described by Rodriguez as “a complete retelling of the original story,” each season will follow the characters…from dusk till dawn…of one day. Hey, he said it. Chances are, this means the series won’t be limited to just the bar featured in the film; It’s possible there’s a Walking Dead-esque vibe to the series, with the crew banding together to stick it out through yet another day of the vampire invasion, moving from location to location. Only, under the El Rey header, there’s surely at least 90% more gratuitous nudity and gleeful bloodshed.
Joining the bloodbath are: D.J. Cotrona (Detroit 1–8–7) and Zane Holtz (Make It or Break It) in the Clooney/Tarantino roles; Robert Patrick (The X-Files) as the pastor; Eiza González (Lola: Érase Una Vez) as Santánico Pandemonium; Wilmer Valderrama and Don Johnson as Texas Rangers; with Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights, the failed Wonder Woman series, we will never forget), Jesse Garcia (Sons of Anarchy), Jake Busey (of the Buseys), and Lane Garrison (Prison Break) wrapping up the cast.
Only Lovers Left Alive is in theaters April 11th. From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series premieres on the El Rey network March 11th at 9PM.
