Shot by Shot with the ‘Birds of Prey’ Trailer

Harley Quinn doesn't need the Joker.

Suicide Squad wasn’t the best introduction to the DC Extended Universe for Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), but she was still the best part of the movie. Every once in a while, explorers discover gold in the most rotten sewers, and Robbie’s performance in Suicide Squad stands out like a shiny diamond among the rough.

The good news is that DC realized that the character deserved a better movie and didn’t give up on her. So, they returned to the drawing board and made a new antihero superteam movie featuring Harley front and center. And it looks really good.

Directed by Cathy Han, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will see Harley Quinn teaming up with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to rescue Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the villainous Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).

Check out the glossy, action-packed trailer below, then join me as I break it all down.

The trailer opens with Harley’s narration explaining that the role of a “harlequin” is to serve. The accompanying scenes show Black Canary and Huntress performing in a club and standing in a church, respectively. Right away, we get a sense that they’re all looking to find a purpose.

Cut to Harley drinking and telling Black Canary that, without a master, no one gives “two shits” about who they are.

In these scenes, Harley reveals that she and the Joker broke up. She clearly isn’t taking it well, though, as she cuts off chunks of her hair and has a drawing of her ex marked with red crosses and a knife. These moments depict a Harley who’s trying to adjust to life without her “master.”
