Come on, Caleb! God, this scene brings me so much joy. It’s the Ex Machina Dance Scene.
To be fair, all of Ex Machina brings me joy (and deep, deep sorrow), and this impromptu dance party was the DayGlo confetti that simultaneously made everything okay and complicated everything even further. If we were already building an insane asylum for Oscar Isaac’s anti-Steve Jobs character in our minds, this scene was an 18-wheeler delivery of fresh bricks for the project. Also, the dude has moves. He and Sonoya Mizuno make a hell of a dance team.
It’s like watching Al Pacino’s final Devil’s Advocate speech dropped into Saturday Night Fever. I’m currently playing it back-to-back with the accordion scene from Holy Motors and having the world’s best afternoon. Fortunately, I had the privilege of speaking with writer/director Alex Garland about the kind of mind games his movie plays with the audience, and that’ll be part of this Friday’s Broken Projector. So stay tuned.
