‘Avatar 4’ Will Be a Prequel, Says Overly Ambitious James Cameron

It’s fair to say Jake Sully isn’t all that fascinating of an accent dropping character. He’s all stock, but the world of Avatar certainly was not. James Cameron apparently gets that, since he already plans on losing Sully for Avatar 4. That’s right, Cameron is already thinking of Avatar 4. After he completes his “thematic” trilogy, he’ll return to Pandora to give us a prequel.

Cameron is thinking of going way back, at least to the time where no Jake Sully was around, “[The events of the sequels] will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we’ll start, not imitating ‘Star Wars,’ but it’s a logical thing to do because we’ll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It’s a plan.”

Since Avatar 4 is rather far off, it comes to no surprise Cameron hasn’t written a word of that script yet, but he does have a plan that sounds familiar to an earlier draft of Avatar, “I haven’t really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world.” When it was Project 880, the original script name for Avatar, there was a good amount of backstory to the human and Na’vi relationship, so perhaps Cameron plans on using that cut out story as the template for Avatar 4.
