Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland film has had two more roles filled by Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter. Carter will play the Red Queen known best as the fat-assed monarch who yells “Off with their heads!” and other pleasantries. Carter’s casting surprises no one as she’s engaged to Burton and attached to him by a shared love of Danny Elfman and all things goth.
Hathaway is set to portray her sister, the White Queen, a character not as well known thanks to Disney’s well-documented racism towards Caucasians. The White Queen has been banished by her sister and recruits Alice’s help in finding and defeating the wily Bandersnatch. Per the imaginary Lewis Carroll notes in my head, the Bandersnatch is a creature that represents the wild and untamed evil of feminine sexuality. Hathaway is currently creating Oscar buzz with her role in Rachel Getting Married, and she will next be seen in the thriller Passengers.
Alice In Wonderland also stars Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. It releases in 2010.
