This will hopefully be a profound take on the garish murder of a fashion icon.

The long-awaited follow-up to The People v. O. J. Simpson finally has a trailer. Titled The Assassination of Gianni Versace, the trailer for season 2 of American Crime Story is absolutely chilling. Watch it below.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace follows the story of serial killer Andrew Cunanan’s (Darren Criss) final, incredibly high-profile murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez). However, a political landscape evidently exists beyond the murder that seeks to explain why the murder happened, with a discussion of homophobia reportedly being at the heart of the season. According to American Crime Story executive producer Ryan Murphy, who spoke at a TCA panel over the summer:

“More than why he was killed, it’s more about why it was allowed to happen. We’re not just doing a crime, we’re talking about a crime within a social idea. […] One of the reasons Andrew Cunanan was able to make his way across the country and pick off the victims, many of whom were gay, was because of homophobia at the time. Homophobia particularly within police departments that refused, in Miami, to put up Wanted posters, even though they knew that Andrew Cunanan was responsible for many of these killings and was probably headed that way.”

The People v. O. J. Simpson enraptured viewers at the beginning of last year, receiving glowing reviews for its arresting dramatic portrayal of events. Without Murphy’s admittedly ham-fisted approaches to television (see: any season of American Horror Story) pulling the strings, a surprisingly thoughtful, riveting commentary on one of the most talked-about murder cases. The People v. O. J. Simpson managed to move past the sensationalism and bawdy fascination in its own right.

From just over a minute of footage in the trailer, it’s hard to tell if The Assassination of Gianni Versace will follow in that same initial blueprint, but it already looks like an intriguing blend of glitz and gore. Plus, The Assassination of Gianni Versace also stars Penelope Cruz in a vengeful first television role, playing Donatella Versace. Ricky Martin and New Girl‘s Max Greenfield will also feature in the season.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace will premiere on FX January 17, 2018.
